Setting Up

Now that the player is loaded it requires a quick-ish setup.  Firstly open the player by right clicking in a status/channel window and select Open WP Player. The player should appear showing something similar to this (depending on your windows theme):

v:shapetype id=_x0000_t75 coordsize = "21600,21600" o:preferrelative = "t" o:spt = "75" filled = "f" stroked = "f" path = " m@4@5 l@4@11@9@11@9@5 xe">o:lock aspectratio="t" v:ext="edit">

Now that it is open we need to set the folders you wish to use for playing or sharing music.  To do this, go to the “Settings” menu and select the sub-menu “Folder Settings”:

 The following window will appear:

This is the Select Folder dialog. In this window you should select the Hard Drive where you keep your music. Here I’ve chosen E: as the drive to be checked. Click OK and wait for the following window to appear (this could take a few minutes to appear depending on how many folders you have on the drive to be checked and the speed of your machine, be patient as it will appear in time).:

In this window select any folders from which you wish to play (only folders containing music files are available, parent directories) To select multiple folders hold [CTRL] as you select/deselect. Once you are happy with your selection click the button at the bottom. Repeat for .wav and .zip file types. When asked “Would you like to add folders from another drive? Click OK to add another drive or Cancel to finish.

**Please note** if NO folders appear or you do not wish to play a certain file type, simply click the button at the bottom with NO folders selected.

After a few seconds you should see something similar to the following:

The main player window but this time the white box contains your songs. This is the initial setup complete. All your selected MP3s will show under the MP3 tab, wavs will be under the WAV tab and zips will be under the ZIP tab.  More about the tabs is below.

Tabs

This player uses tab controls. This means that much more information can be placed in a relatively small area.  Each tab is clearly labelled and a description of each tab follows:

 MP3

WAV

ZIP

Channel

List Maker

Search

List Grabber

 The MP3 Tab

This tab holds your MP3 files. It is in a sorted order to make files easier to find and play.

The WAV Tab

This tab holds your wav files.  It too is in sorted order for ease of use.

 The ZIP Tab

This tab is very similar to the previous two, zips are shown here in order.

 The Channel Tab

This tab looks similar to the previous 3, however this will display and music that has been played in any channel you are a member in. To grab the music either double click the line you want or highlight it and click the Grab button.  To clear the list click the Clear All button, or to remove lines individually, select them and click Remove.

Back To Tabs

The List Maker Tab

This tab allows you to make a list of all your music. You can decide to list just mp3/wav/zip or all types, as well as add a “disclaimer” to your list, which can be anything you like. You can also choose to include the folder names in the list.  To make a list you select the items you want, (here mp3 and wavs with the disclaimer and no folder names) and click Make List

In a few seconds the following window will appear:

This shows that the list maker has completed successfully, if you wish to open the list to check you can double click the RED writing.

You can then advertise your list to the channel in which you opened the player by clicking the Advertise List button..

Back To Tabs

 The Search Tab

Ever forgotten who sings a particular song, or you know who sings it but cant get the song name? If you know you have the file the Search tab will come in very handy.  To use it you type your search string in the top box:

Click the Search button and something like this will appear:

These results can be played straight from the result window. See Playing Music for more info.

Back To Tabs

The List Grabber Tab

This tab allows you to get someone’s list, get rid of things you don’t want or already have, and automatically grab what’s left. Brilliant if you have a lot of songs you want to get but don’t have the time to sit and grab them all manually. To use it you need to already have someone’s list. Then do the following.

 1) Click Select List

2) Select the persons list(remember to extract zipped lists first).and click Open.

3) Click the Channel Button.

4) Type in the name of the channel you wish to grab in. IRCWavPlayers for example. You don’t need to use the # prefix although you can I f you choose, it will be inserted automatically anyhow.

5) Remove any files from the list by highlighting the line(s) and clicking the Remove button.

6) Begin grabbing by clicking Resume.

 Playing Music

There are a few ways of playing music using WP MP3 Player. The easiest way is to simply double click a song in the MP3, WAV, or Search Result List boxes. Alternatively select the song in one of these boxes and hit the PLAY button at the bottom right of the player.

Another way to play music is to check the Random Play checkbox. This will play a random song from whichever tab you are in(mp3 wav or search). When this song ends it plays another, and so on.

Another way to play music is using the repeat function. Like a CD player if you have selected repeat, by checking the Repeat checkbox, the currently playing song will begin again as soon as it is finished.

For more advanced options see Silent Play and Play Messages.

Multiple Channels

To play in more than one channel, right click in the channel where you wish to play. Choose “Add #Channel-name As Channel”. This will add this channel and all messages will be sent to it as well as the original channel(s).

To stop playing to a channel right click in the channel and select “Stop playing to #Channel-name” (or leave the channel).

Play Messages

Play messages are displayed by default when you open the player. These are messages sent to the channel you opened the player in, saying what song you are playing and how to grab it. You may wish to add your own funny messages along with the basic one. To do this you need a play messages file. This is simply a .txt file with each play message on a new line.

An extract from one could look something like:

To use a play message file click on Change File at the right:

*NOTE* If you cannot see this option you are not connected to a channel or have not associated the player with a channel, read how to do that here.

Choose your file from the box that appears and click Open.

If you do not wish to show anyone what you are playing un-Check the Play Messages Checkbox.

Back To Contents

 Silent Play

Silent Play allows you to “play” a song without hearing it. This is mostly used in channels where you are random playing all the time. If silent play is selected you play music in the same way as described here, but if you choose random a timer is set and a new song “plays” every 3 minutes.

*NOTE* If you are playing silently AND randomly, when you un-check Silent Play a random song will begin, this is to unset the timer and get normal play going, so that songs are not cut off after 3 minutes. If you don’t want a random song to play, un-check Random BEFORE un-checking Silent Play.

@find and Sending Options

If you want people to be able to find music from your folders check the Handle @find checkbox. If you have another player sending @find results or do not wish to show others your music UN-check the box, it is UN-Checked by default.

If you want the player to handle sends automatically when someone types in channel !yournickname songtobegrabbed.mp3 then check the Handle Sends box. If you have another player or would prefer mirc itself to do this leave the box unchecked.

*NOTE* to prevent double sending or attempting to send the files twice, in mirc go to file/options/sounds/requests and uncheck 4th box (listen for '!nick file' get requests)

Hints And Info

To change the channel you are playing to there is no need to close the player, simply right click in the new channel and choose “Play to #Channel ONLY”

If play messages are OFF, you will still see a message appear telling you what is being played, this message is NOT shown to anyone else, only you can see it.

E.g.

.

If you open the player in Status Window, the options for play messages will not be shown.

At the bottom right of the player there is a small WP link click this to go straight to the WavPlayers Website.

If you only want to play songs by one artist use the Search tab and select Random.

The player will automatically detect which tab you are using and will play from that tab accordingly, when using random play for example if you have been playing MP3s but decide that from the next song you want to play wavs just change tab to WAV.

To set the player on top of all other windows go to Settings/Set On Top.

Stealth

Stealth mode is a mode to search for and download music where only those getting/sending the file are able to see what is being grabbed. In stealth mode messages are sent differently, as encoded messages, to the channel. For example if I have stealth mode activated and type @find dixie chicks in channel, the message is intercepted by the player and sent as a special "CTCP" event. To any non-compatible player user the message in channel would now look something like [billythekid:#IRCWavPlayers SEARCH] +8FEL;'ET:&5K:60` (that was the channel message for @find billythekid).

Anyone with a compatible player sees nothing and simply sends results in the normal way.

If you wish to grab a song in stealth mode you simply type/paste the line into the box in the same way as usual, the player intercepts this message and sends another "CTCP" type message to the person you wish to grab from.

If your request is successful you should get some kind of reply, although this is not always the cases.

During stealth mode any messages pertaining to your own grabs/@finds are shown only to you, with the <<<PRIVATE>>> prefix.

To activate stealth mode go to Settings/Stealth, a check will be placed beside the word Stealth, like setting on-top.

*NOTE* Not all players are compatible with Stealth mode, currently I only know of Omenserve and WP MP3 Player which use this method. Therefore your @finds may obtain less results than a normal channel(non-stealth) @find.

*NOTE* In the spirit of Stealth, you will not be able to see what people are searching for when they are using stealth, also you may think you are spontaneously sending files to people, because you cannot see the request to grab. Don't worry, this just means that stealth mode is working well.

FAQs

Q.        Can I play in more than one channel at a time?

A.        Yes!! In the latest version you can do this, Click here for more info

Q.        I can’t hear my album zips.

A.        Zip files cannot be played as such and can only be shown to channel for sharing purposes, if you wish to play a zip file and hear the music, first unzip to one of your selected folders.

Q.        The list grabber sometimes stops grabbing.

A.        The list grabber is a very basic version in this player, If the person you are grabbing from gets disconnected it will not automatically try to re-grab when they come back. Also if they send an error message (You got the filename wrong… for example) and don’t send the file, you won’t re-request it. It works by basically reading a new request line to your grab channel every time the current request is completed. Therefore if it doesn’t complete, it just stops.

Q.        I sometimes send files when nobody has requested them.

A.        The person receiving the files is grabbing in Stealth mode. This is perfectly normal. More about Stealth here.
